WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THE VARIOUS TITLES IN FRONT AND BEHIND A DOG’S NAME?

We at Duckback Labradors emphasize the versatility of our breed. When one glances at the pedigree of a specific dog, there may be a title in front of the dog’s name and/or a title at the end of the name. The title CH indicates that the dog has earned a breed championship in conformation; thus meeting the number of points required for the title. Competition in conformation judges one dog against another in regards to meeting the requirements for the breed standard.

Letters, such as CD, CDX, UD, JH, SH, MH, TD, NA all appear at the end of the dog’s name. These titles indicate that the dog has achieved certain performance standards in the various venues in order to earn that degree. We emphasize and aspire to raise Labradors or to breed to dogs who have earned these various degrees. We feel that it indicates three things about the dog: a) the dog is very trainable and eager to learn and please b) the owner has taken a great deal of time in training and participating in the various events and c) perhaps of greatest significance – this dog has an excellent temperament and relates well with other dogs. The various performance events require participation amongst other dogs without showing any aggression or a bad temperament. Again, one can look on the AKC website to learn more about the titles and their meaning.
